Our work continues to discover the history of settlement in the Meon Valley. Following the completion of five years of excavations at the Roman Temple Site from 2016-2020, we are now investigating a new site. Geophysics carried out by the group during 2020 revealed a large ditch, believed to be an Iron Age hillfort. Further resistivity and magnetometry surveys conducted during 2021 showed features consistent with the inside of a hillfort. This year’s excavation will investigate one of these anomalies – a possible Iron Age roundhouse. The dig will take place at a site in Meonstoke and will be directed by Professor Tony King.
This is an exciting opportunity to take part in practical archaeology. Participants of all levels from novice to expert are welcomed, although you should be reasonably fit to take part. No experience is necessary as training will be provided. You must be over 18 to take part and ideally live in or around the Meon Valley. We also welcome participants who are 16 or 17 years old with an interest in archaeology, but they must be accompanied by an adult.
Some of our participants from previous years said:
‘Really had an amazing time – fulfilled a lifetime ambition – seriously!’
‘I absolutely loved it and hope I can be included next year.’
‘Thank you for the opportunity, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do’.
